Reading list

読書感想文は書かない・書けないけれど、記録として残しておきたいです。今、これらの作品を楽しんでいます。 (文芸翻訳は今の時点の私には無理だといっていいでしょう。引用は翻訳せず、元の形で使います。) I can't and won't write a summer reading essay on these but want to leave a record of the works that I'm reading now. (At this point, I won't even try my hand at literary translation, so the cited passages are in their original form.) ヴァージニア・ウルフ/Virginia Woolf:「昼と夜」/ Night and Day " He believed secretly and rather defiantly, for it was a fact not capable of proof, that there was something very remarkable about his family." (Chapter II) " The dark removed the stimulus of human companionship, and a tear actually slid down her cheek, accompanying a sudden conviction within her that she loved Ralph, and that he didn't love her." (Chapter XIV) " Never are voices so beautiful as on a winter's evening, when dusk almost hides the body, and they seem to issue from nothingness with a note of intimacy seldom heard by day." (Chapter XV)...

No words

Heat (wave and otherwise)

On commence !

I was sitting over breakfast at the Breslin with Claire last Thursday when this blog was born. We were each mourning our linguistic atrophies -- specifically in French and Japanese for the both of us. Possibly inspired by the lovely ricotta pancakes with macerated strawberries and candied almonds, we decided to start a blog that would stretch and strengthen those dormant muscles. Claire is in transit and quite occupied for the month, so allow me to get the ball rolling! I am revealing my unabashedly selfish motivations for blogging, which are specifically to provide an outlet for me to write when the fancy strikes, to get myself into the habit of writing in French and Japanese, to solicit comments and revisions in those languages, to take advantage of positive peer pressure from Claire and from readers to continue my language endeavors, and to have another means of connecting with Claire while we live on opposite coasts (she in Berkeley, I in New York). J'ai envie de continuer ...
